We use a memory stick rather than a CD or DVD because of its long term storage ability. Data on CDs and DVDs will detiorate as time goes by. Discs will become unusable quicker if they are left in sunlight or by heat.

Hard disc drives [HDD - the most common storage facility inside desktops and laptops] are much more stable. However, due to the fact that the discs are revolving at super fast speeds, these too will eventually fail - always back up your work!

Memory sticks [USB sticks] are solid state discs [SSD]. SSDs are creeping into desktops and laptops and are already in tablets, phones, and many camera cards. They contain no moving parts and are considered to be the best storage devices for archiving data. This does not mean that you should not bother to back up your work!
